Faux Wainscoting

Have you ever felt like you need a vacation from a vacation?  Well, I do........and I think Heidi would agree with me!  Vegas was a non relaxing vacation.  BUT it was all worth it as it was full of fun, excitement and most of all memorable :-)  We had lots of belly laughs, good food, lots of exercise, used lots of band aids and one of us was even left with a watermelon size bruise.  I even made a new friend-Mary who I cant wait to hang out with again with!

While my family missed me and I was having fun, my mind was still going non stop..............new projects!  I knew I wanted to do this before I left, and so happened that we had a lot of rain when we were gone so the hubs has been home.  I dug into this project right away.

Yes, I know......my house is brand new, what could I be doing to it now...{i can think of many things, ha ha}  My dining room is connected with my kitchen to a big open room.  I some how really wanted to break it apart {of course without a wall} so it looked like a real dinning room.  Faux Wainscoting it was.  I had to sketch out the measurements before tackling the project, but all in all I think it worked out well.  We have 9 ft ceilings and crown molding, so I went a little higher then a 1/3 up the wall for the chain rail board, then we just made our own "fake picture frames" {as I call them} and evenly spaced them together.  Yes, my poor fingers hurt from caulking everything!!!

Here's what my dinning room looked before:

And here's what 2 days took me to do:

And yes, Jenn......still no curtains :-)  Everyone thinks we are weird for not having any kind of window treatment on any of our windows!  We have a beautiful view of the woods; I hate covering it!

I actually had my husband start a similar project today in our mud room.  This one will take a while as I haven't quite figured out exactly what I want to do.  I know it will be the board and batten though :-)  You will have to check back soon to see.

I hope all you mommas have a great Mother's Day Weekend!  This is my first mommies day, and I'm spending it planting all my flowers which I love to do!!!!!!  Oh, and our new water fountain!  Pictures coming soon.

  1. Beautiful job! My husband and I are planning to do the same project in our dining room. However, we have orange peel textured walls (yuck). I am wondering if you ran into this problem and if so, what did you do? If not, do you have any suggestions on how to make the wainscoting appear to be smooth without having to sand down the drywall? Any advice is appreciated!
